Following a short contract with Teague/Boeing working on 787 interiors, i returned to Microsoft as a train modeler and texture artist under the incredible art direction of Peter Zahn.Being a simulator, this required the most physically accurate detailing of each train car, both interior and exterior.
This was the first time I had to digitally paint my own photo-realistic textures as opposed to the photo-manipulation techniques I was familiar with in my previous titles. Under the guidance of an inspirational artist and art director, Peter Lewis, I learned the proper techniques of using non-destructive layering, including integration of paths, shapes, layer masks, adjustment layers, layer modes and layer effects. It was not uncommon for me to have texture sheets being made of up to 60 different and appropriately labeled layers, detailing down to the bird poop. This was also my first foray into incorporating the then “next-generation” techniques of multi-texture maps.
A few months in my contract, I had instilled enough confidence in the art director to let me work remotely for the remainder of my one year contract.
